PT. JOTIN BHATTACHARYA

Pt. Jotin Bhattacharya was born in Varanasi on 1st Jan, 1926. His quest for music and Philosophy lead him to seek two greatest teachers of all time in their respective fields. He came in contact with Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishan during his post-graduation studies at Banaras Hindu University one of the greatest seat of learning for philosophical studies during that time. After competing his Masters in Philosophy, his unquenched thirst for Indian Classical Music , ultimately lead him to Baba Allaudin Khan in Mahiyar. Even though being already an accomplished Sarod Player before going to Mahiyar, he surrendered himself to Baba’s teachings with all humility in 1949 . He spent 8 years learning from Baba , staying at his residence. (probably the only disciple to be admitted inside the residence other than Baba’s family members). He became the most trusted disciple of Baba, he became personal secretary of Baba and became close confidante of the great Ustaad.
Baba Allaudin Khan was greatly impressed by the dedication and the musical talent of the young disciple and eventually taught him many deep intricacies of Indian ragas to Pt. Jotin Bhattacharya. Eventually he started his solo performances in 1956 though he continued learning from Baba till 1965. The enormous treasure that he accumulated from Baba, was evident during all his public performances. There were series of concerts all over India and all music pundits and critics acknowledged that indeed the legacy of Baba has been truly preserved by this talented musician. His first album brought out by HMV in 1972 was an one of the rarest gems in Indian Classical Music comprising of Raag Marwah and a self composed Raaga called “Sampurna Kanhara”.
His performances, not only enthralled audience in India but his performances in Europe and America also deeply moved the audience. At later stage of his musical career he reduced his solo performances and concentrated more on his musical meditation and teaching students. His dedication to his students and emphasizing on maintaining musical purity is quite known in the musical parlance. Even though Pandit ji maintained a stoic indifference towards awards and recognition but there were still few which came his way in form of “Sangeet Naatak Academy” award one the most prestigious awards in performing arts, “Uttar Pradesh Ratna” award conferred by the state Govt. of Uttar Pradesh.
Panditji’s constant focus on his Guru lead him to write some memorable books which are greatly appreciated not only by music connoisseurs but also by musicologists all over the world. His first published book on his Guru “Ustaad Allaudin Khan and his Music”, was an authorized biography of Baba Allaudin Khan. This was followed by 2 books which were published in Bengali and Hindi named “Allaudin Khan O aamara” i.e “Allaudin Khan and Us”. These two books were also greatly appreciated by Music connoisseurs .
