BABA ALAUDDIN  KHAN  SAHEEB

Ustad Wazir Khan of Rampur was a direct descendant of Mian Tansen and Baba Alauddin  Khan was his disciple. Baba’s insatiable appetite for musicled him to learn during the formative years of his life.

Ustad Baba Allauddin Khan who was born in village Shibpur in Brahaminbaria now in Bangladesh. The gifted child was destined to take over the reins of  Five centuries old Senia Gharana named after Mian Tansen, one of the Navratnas in the court of Moghul Emperor AKBAR.

Baba received tutelage from Ustad Wazir Khan who was a descendent of Mian Tansen through his daughter Saraswati Devi. Basics of vocal from Nulo Gopal, Pakhawaj and Tabla from Nand Lal Babu, Shehnai and Clarionet from Sri Hazari and Scared initially from Ustad Ahmed Ali Khan and ultimately from Ustad   Wazir Khan. In short Baba was a repository of music not only classical or folk Universial.

Baba was the court Musician of the Maihar and that is how the Gharana got the name of Senia Maihar Gharana.

Baba’s name is associated with Indian Classical Instrumental Music just like great names of Swami Hari Das, Mian Tansen and Baiju Bawra are associated with Indian Classical Vocal Music.

He was a creative artist who created many raags and a great teacher who inspired and taught generations of musicians.

His contribution to the field of music is tremendous. The credit for transformation of Rabab, Been, Sursringar, sitar and surbahar goes to him. He had a brigade of students, to  name a famous few  are :-
