Shri Arupratan Mukerjee belongs to the next generation musicians donning the mantle of ‘Senia-Mahiyar Gharana’ and is a well known name among the connoisseurs of traditional Indian Classical Music. The ‘Senia-Mahiyar Gharana’ boasts of its legacy from the school of Miya Tansen ; the famous court musician of Emperor Akbar. The gharana has produced some of the greatest instrumentalists of 20th century the likes of which has never been seen before, few names like Ustaad Ali Akbar Khan , Smt. Annapurna Devi(daughter of Ustaad Allaudin Khan) , Pt. Ravi Shankar , Pt. Jotin Bhattacharya, Pt. Nikhil Banerjee, Pt. Pannalal Ghosh, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia are known world over but the list of finest musicians from this school is never ending.
Arupratan ji had taken up Sitar since the age of 5 but it was only under the careful guidance of the great Sarod exponent Pandit Jotin Bhattacharya, he developed a unique signature style which is different from many of the contemporaries, yet preserving the soul of the ‘Mahiyar’ form of music.
Shri Arupratan’s style of music characterizes the typical ‘Mahiyar’ style of systematic progressions in Aalap establishing the raga note by note. One distinct character of his music is the influence of Dhrupad style and vast repertoire of unadulterated compositions by old masters like Ustaad Allaudin Khan , Ustaad Wazir Khan sahab (guru of Allaudin Khan Sahab and direct descendant of Miya Tansen lineage), which brings back the charm of the old world music in its purest form.
He has been performing as a professional Sitar player for almost 2 decades and despite getting many accolades, till date he considers himself a music sophomore who is constantly engaged in finding new forms to evolve his music, surely a mark of a true musician. Apart from being a performing artiste he is equally passionate about preserving our rich heritage of classical music. He is the founder member of “Baba Allaudin Khan Foundation Trust” which is into diverse activities related to Indian music but it is pretty well known among music lovers and fellow musicians for providing a unique platform for aspiring musicians to showcase their talent.
